Designing A Backyard Pond

If you are in the process of designing a luxurious and relaxing landscape, why not create your own backyard pond? Here are a few things to consider before starting construction on the pond.

Choosing Between Flowing And Still Water

Even though still water ponds are used for their reflective qualities and create a tranquil feeling, they tend to have more problems with algae and insects than flowing ponds. Standing water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, meaning that your yard will be anything but tranquil once those bugs hatch. A small recirculating pump can help solve the problem, or you can place a small fountain in the pond. Another option is to add some fish, but if you do, you’ll also need a filter to clean the water.

The Design And Style Of The Pond

It is important to spend time designing an aesthetically pleasing and functional pond for your backyard. For example, a rustic retaining wall, complete with waterfall, is perfect for yards with a sloped wooded area. A geometric concrete pond with a dramatic fountain would suit a contemporary backyard lounge. If stones, waterfalls, and water lilies just aren’t your thing, don’t despair. There are loads of beautiful modern water features available today - from whimsical fountains to modern waterfalls and water-walls.

Choosing The Pond Plants

Something to keep in mind in your design is that ponds created with different depths give you the option of adding a wider variety of plants. Ideally, a pond should have oxygenators, aquatic plants, marginals and bog plants. Although some plants work better in a pond setting, the color, height, and types are completely up to you. Miniature or pygmy plants are recommended for tiny ponds or container water gardens.

Seating Around Your Pond

You’ll want to be sure that there is seating near your pond so that you can enjoy it to its fullest. In some cases, a pond might be right next to your deck so no additional seating would be required. In other situations, the pond might be tucked away in the garden, in which case you would want to add a garden bench or maybe even a pergola to create more emphasis on the area.

Backyard ponds are a great way to add a beautiful focal point in the middle of your relaxing seating area. After deciding on your pond’s design, it is time to choose the building material. Wall stone, limestone, and natural stone material are all great pond stones. If you can’t decide which one is best for your landscape, talk to the experts at Garrity Stone Inc. in Indiana.
