How to Prepare Your Gravel Driveway for Winter

Now is the time to prepare your gravel driveway for winter. Garrity Stone, Inc. is your go-to source for gravel and other aggregate products. We offer aggregates of all shapes and sizes, so you can find the perfect product to fill in your driveway, walkways, and around landscaping fixtures. Don’t let your driveway turn into a rutted, muddy mess this winter; instead, call Garrity Stone and get your gravel delivered today.

Level the Surface

Have you noticed ruts forming in your driveway? As cars drive in and out of the driveway, the weight of the vehicle pushes the stone outward. Eventually, if not corrected, ruts will form and make driving through snow and ice very difficult. To avoid this, hop on the tractor and push the stone back into the middle of the driveway. This will create a level, firm surface for winter driving.

Repair Potholes

In addition to ruts, gravel driveways are prone to issues with potholes. Unfortunately, simply filling the hole with gravel won't fix the problem. Instead, you must widen the hole and fill it in with stone one layer at a time. Typically, driveways are layered with different sizes of stone. Thus, you should fill and compact each layer accordingly.

Top It Off

Drainage, plowing, and high traffic will eventually wash out the driveway. Therefore, we recommend replenishing your driveway with fresh gravel every couple of years. We recommend using sharp, angular stone, like our crushed limestone, as opposed to smooth, round stones. Crushed limestone locks together when compacted and prevents shifting.
